To assist my undergraduate students I developed several teaching tools. For all of my courses I have a general Guide to History to help them navigate lectures, seminars, and essay writing. In my courses on colonial Latin America I designed a Guide to Primary Sources: Early Modern Spanish World, which is a bibliography of English translations of Spanish and Portuguese texts for research papers. Below you will find a series of document exercises, one-page excerpts from an array of different historical sources. I use these in lectures to reinforce lecture material and to develop critical reading skills of primary sources.
HIS 106Y (NATIVES, SETTLERS, AND SLAVES: COLONIZING THE AMERICAS, 1492-1804)
Acosta, José de (Natural and Moral History)
Allen, Richard and Absalom Jones (A Narrative of the Proceedings of the Black People)
Almeida Portugal, Pedro Miguel de (Letter to King Joao V)
